Final exhibit setup
This was the final setup for my exhibit. I am incredibly happy with how it turned out. Of course there are always things I wish I could’ve down differently, but as a whole I think it communicates what I want very well. The UV thread woven into the yarn works exactly how I wanted it to.
progress of exhibit setup
While setting up my exhibit I of course ran into some challenges. Some of my text didn’t line up how I wanted it to and my vinyl wasn’t working how it should’ve. However, after I got through all of the hurdles of the setup, I couldn’t be happier with the finished product.
Final Mockup of Exhibit
This is my final mockup of my exhibit. I went through several iterations and testing phases before arriving at this design. For the final physical piece, the wave will be constructed using thick crochet yarn to connect back to the issue of fast fashion waste. My goal is to highlight how fast fashion releases thousands of microfibers into the ocean—pollutants that are harmful, yet largely invisible to the naked eye.
To incorporate an interactive element, I plan to provide UV flashlights that viewers can shine onto the wave. This will reveal UV-reactive thread embedded in the piece, symbolizing the presence of microplastics that exist but often go unseen.
On the right-side panel, I have included a progression chart that illustrates where microplastics originate and how they ultimately make their way into the ocean.
Initial Sketches
These are a few of my original sketches. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to continue with a wave or water theme, similar to what I explored with my clock. My initial plan for the clock was to use string to connect back to the issue of fast fashion, but that idea didn’t come together as intended. Because of that, I was determined to incorporate the concept more effectively into my final exhibit piece.
I also considered other approaches, such as constructing the wave entirely out of trash or similar materials. However, I ultimately decided that using string would create a cleaner visual while still conveying a strong and meaningful message.
Digital Sketch
This was one of the more developed digital sketches for my exhibit. At this stage, I had established the title and some basic text, which helped me determine the overall layout. I was also experimenting with the design of the wave and how I wanted it to appear.
In this digital version, I used a gradient for the wave’s stroke to give myself a rough idea of how the UV-reactive thread might look in the final piece.
